Schuette • Chairman of D07.02.03 - ASTM International • November 2007 - Present • Luke serves as the Chairman of Task Group D07.02.03 Structural Engineered Bamboo and lead the team that coordinated the addition of LVB (Laminated Veneer Bamboo) Structural Engineered bamboo to the standard. 5456 11a. • From 2009-2012 Luke worked with the executive committee of ASTM’s D07 division of EWP (Engineered Wood Products) to establish testing procedure for LVB. The work generated by Luke and his team also added LVB into the AC-47 section of the ICC (International Code Council) of which is referenced by in Building Codes throughout the world. • ICC-ES Publishes the IBC (International Building Code) which has been referenced for the last 35 Years in the USA and Internationally

International Standards & Certs. • ASTM(American Society of Testing Materials • ASTM D07.02.03 – Structural Engineered Wood Division • Luke and his team added LVB(Laminated Veneer Bamboo) • This addition represented the first new natural material to be added to the standard in nearly 35 years. • The standard was added into ASTM 5456 the worlds most recognized engineered wood standard for structural materials.

  14. 15. Fire Performance of E-Bamboo • If asked whether a steel beam or a Bamboo beam is most vulnerable when exposed to flames most people will say wood or natural materials. This is a natural response because steel doesn’t burn. In fact, the answer is again not so straightforward. When steel reaches a critical temperature, it will fail, suddenly and catastrophically, because in great heat it softens and eventually melts. Average building fires reach temperatures of 700 to 1000°C. • Steel weakens as its temperature climbs above 230°C, retaining only 10 percent of its strength at 750°C. • Engineered Bamboo does not ignite until it reaches over 400°C Once it catches fire at around 500°C , Engineered Bamboo develops a protective insulating char layer. • Large Bamboo beams have better fire resistance than unprotected steel beams of similar size because the interior of the Bamboo remains much cooler.
